Travel can be great way to learn not just through observation of what is going on around you but also by communicating with locals. You also meet fellow travellers so this gives you a chance to learn about their country too. This was a bonus I had not accounted for. I know you have to be careful about how you interpret what you see. I think also that as travellers that may be quite cosseted normally we have to be careful not to idealise. It can look quite picturesque seeing ladies sat in the markets of Bolivia with their wonderful dresses and bowler hats. It however may hide the difficulty in making money to live and the hardship in getting the produce. Or how hard the task of being a marketer is. We all need up to date passports if we need to travel. My cousin lives in the uk and is trying to plan a trip to the United States. She has never had a passport. She put in her papers two months ago and still hasn't received her passport. I read somewhere they have a web site where you can find passport tracking uk information. The site will tell you how long it will be before you get your passport. They can tell you what problems they are having with the information you sent. My cousin went on the site last night only to find out that her passport picture was wrong and she needed to send in a new picture. This was the only hold up on tracking her passport. You have to have someone who is approved to do passport pictures take the picture and send in to the office with a notarized statement saying that this is a legal picture of the person in question. There are so many fake passports floating around in the uk. They have very strict rules now to get a passport.
Backpacking In Europe

For some people simply sitting on a beach and relaxing is not the idea of a perfect holiday. These people like to be active and constantly exploring; it is these people that prefer to be go backpacking.
Backpacking in the 21st century is hardly slumming it however. The hostels you will encounter whilst backpacking in europe are not far off hotel standards but are far cheaper. Gone are the days of large dormitories, most hostels now have private rooms and some even have en suites. You do of course pay slightly more for these luxuries but for some it is well worth it.
The great think about backpacking around Europe is that you never need to plan anything. Trains are so frequent and cheap that it is possibly to simply turn up at the station before deciding where to visit next. Hostels are rarely fully booked even in summer months although you may have slightly less choice.
